This newly constructed postmodern home located south of the highway in Amagansett is a relaxing weekend getaway for our busy New York City clients. Construction had started on the project when our design team was brought in to enhance the builders' "landscape package". The new landscape design needed to match the architecture style of both the interior and exterior of the house. Our clients wanted to screen out unwanted views from all four sides of the property, create an outside room that would reflect back into the living spaces within the home and provide year round interest with the main focus on summer seasonal color (when the house would be used the most). In addition, our clients desired ornamental grasses, hydrangeas and boxwoods, as well as an English garden style theme. To meet the challenge of making this small property feel open and sprawling, the design was laid out to meet our clients' needs while maintaining a simple and elegant landscape. Working within the existing site conditions, this quarter of an acre property had little space for large landscape plantings. To soften the home's exterior and tie in all fixed features on the site (driveway, pool house and retaining walls), a dominant plant palette of lavender, pink, blue and white was used. RRT retaining walls were constructed along the entire back and sides of the property to maintain the grade. |
